Periodontists and Gum Disease Treatments

The Importance of Periodontists and Gum Disease Treatment

Most people are not aware of what a Periodontist does or how important their job really is. Periodontists are professionals skilled in the treatment and prevention of gum disease. They study the structures of the teeth, gums, and the diseases that harm them. Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, can have many different causes but most of the time it is due to lack of oral hygiene. Along with treating gum disease, periodontists specialize in oral surgery.

Periodontists are trained in professional dentistry before choosing to further their education into periodontics. It is one of the few specialties that is included in the American Dental Association. For a periodontist to become a licensed professional he or she must complete a four-year college degree and graduate from dental school obtaining a DDS or DMD degree. They must also complete three to seven years of formal training in an accredited Periodontal program to receive their Master of Science, Doctor of Science, Doctor of Medical Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in periodontics.

What to Know About Gum Disease

Gum disease, caused mainly by a build up of plaque and bacteria, is easily avoided when proper oral hygiene is performed daily. If the gum disease is already in a developed stage you may require oral surgery. When the surgery is performed the infected portion of gum tissue may need to be removed. This type of surgery is one of the major jobs of the periodontist. Brushing and flossing twice a day is all it takes to avoid gum disease the majority of the time.

There are several signs which occur when you develop gum disease. One of the signs is when the bone starts to diminish and the tooth’s root becomes exposed causing pain. Another common sign is the build up of pus between the teeth and gums. Because it may be mistaken as excess plaque, and tooth recession is not always obvious, it is important to visit the periodontist at least once a year.

In some cases, people who do practice proper hygiene and take the proper steps in cleaning, their teeth may still develop gum disease. A lot of the time people who have gum disease are not even aware they have it. They live throughout life having a type of gum disease and do not realize it until it is too late. For this reason it is important to consult a periodontist– they are able to catch the disease before it spreads, gets worse, and leads to tooth loss.

When visiting a periodontist, he or she will check the condition of your teeth and investigate whether or not you need special treatment. After the check-up is complete, the periodontist will normally have your teeth properly cleaned. Once the cleaning is complete, the dental hygienist will give you a few tips on how to keep your teeth as clean as possible.

Don’t confuse a dentist or orthodontist with a periodontist— periodontists have different expertise. They are highly trained and skilled in the procedures making your gums and teeth last as long as possible. Periodontists ensure that you do not experience diseases, conditions, or loss of any teeth.
